Beyond Visibility: Putting Grid Edge Intelligence to Work

October 13, 2026

Most utilities have visibility. The real challenge is putting that visibility to work. After years of investing in modernization, utilities have access to a growing volume of data about what’s happening across the grid, yet much of that data never makes it out of the systems that created or collected it.

The focus now is getting the right insights to the systems and processes responsible for acting on them.

Connecting Intelligence to Operations
Today's intelligent endpoints and distributed intelligence solutions provide a more detailed view of grid performance and customer-connected resources than ever before. But utility teams still need the context required to understand an event and determine the appropriate response.

Consider a potential fault detected by an intelligent endpoint. Analytics identify the event and add location and operational context. The resulting insight reaches the utility’s Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) or Outage Management System (OMS), supported by network information from the Geographic Information System (GIS). Operators can assess the issue, locate it more accurately and respond before it develops into a larger disruption.

The value is not simply in detecting the event. It’s in turning that insight into action.

Building on What Utilities Already Have
Moving data isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds. Most utilities rely on a broad mix of applications, platforms and data sources they’ve accumulated over time. Every new connection must be built, secured and maintained, increasing complexity as the technology environment evolves.

This is where Itron's Intelligent Edge Operating System (IEOS) comes in. IEOS is the Grid Edge Intelligence Operating System that connects Itron applications and validated grid-edge data with ADMS and OMS platforms, DERMS, GIS and enterprise data environments. Instead of separate paths for every application and use case, it provides a standardized way to share high-fidelity data.

Importantly, IEOS complements a utility’s enterprise data platform or data lake rather than replacing it. This makes curated Itron data available within existing analytics, AI and enterprise reporting environments while maintaining established data strategies. As a result, utilities can reduce the need for additional point-to-point integrations across the organization.

Utilities also maintain control over how their data is accessed and used. IEOS supports governed access and customer control of utility data, with deployment options that include Itron-hosted SaaS and customer-cloud environments.

Using Grid-Edge Data to Inform Investment Planning
The same intelligence that supports operational decisions also strengthens capital planning. A clearer view of assets and feeder performance helps utilities identify emerging constraints, understand where risk is increasing and determine where investments are needed with confidence.

Bringing operating conditions into the planning process creates a direct link between day-to-day system performance and long-term investment strategy, helping improve reliability while supporting affordability goals.

One Foundation, System-Wide Value
By providing a common foundation for grid-edge data, IEOS allows information collected to support one objective to be reused for another without requiring IT to construct a separate architecture for every new use case.

That is where the value of the broader platform becomes tangible. When operations, planning and IT teams work from the same validated data, grid edge intelligence can finally be put to work.
